Right around the corner

This is a reminder to all my readers that Mother's Day is right around the corner. Not that you needed reminding!  Here are a few of my top picks for some practical gifts for your wonderful mother!

Have you had a family picture taken lately?  I'm sure all my younger parent readers get them taken often, but as a whole whole family...grandparents, moms, dads, aunts, uncles, cousins?  We had some Mattingly family pictures taken last year as a gift to my parents.  It was the perfect gift!  It also made designing our Christmas cards easier.

Does your mom like jewelry?  I usually wear costume jewelry but really love the mother's rings my boys have given me.  Think outside the box...if your mom doesn't wear rings then maybe earrings or a necklace with their birthstone.  Mine are not "wear everyday" rings.  Better yet, Brandon had Parker's birthstone ring designed just for me after a jeweler and I had a conversation about, "big 'o honking stones" at a wedding.  I'm sure you can imagine that conversation!  I also love the name charms a friend gave to me when my children were born.  They scream mother's day!

Is your mom a master of the kitchen?  A few years ago we put together an herb garden for our mom.  We purchased an iron rack and some terra cotta pots and filled them with herbs.  Even if she doesn't find herself using fresh herbs often, it just looks nice on a patio!

Wrought Iron Plant Stand -BONUS...it's 30% off!!

Is your mom an entertainer? (maybe I should clarify that...)  Meaning does she enjoy hosting friends and family for events?  If so, wouldn't some fun table linens or service ware be a neat thing.  Something that maybe she wouldn't go out and buy for herself but would love to have.

Sweet tea sippin porch

I don't know about you, but when I think of The South, I envision myself sitting on a beautiful front porch sipping sweet tea.  So, where better to get ideas for my southern inspired front porch than Southern Living.  From bold and bright to clean and crisp, they have it all.  Now the hard part...which one fits our style best?

Bungalow Porch
How simple to recreate this look.
An outdoor rug in a warm color, some old tables painted with bright or cool colors and a swing or bench.

Charleston-Style Piazza
I love the look of bright green with black.  This seems like such a cozy spot to sit and talk with friends.

Classic Charleston Porch
This look is perfect for our narrow porch.  A few benches or chairs up against the house with smaller tables.  P.S.  I love these tables.
Cozy Side Porch
Another perfect porch for entertaining friends.  Enough seating and table space for a relaxing evening.

From the mouth of babes

I often have moments where my children do or say something and I think, "oh man I need to write that down".   Well, where better to chronicle their super cute moments than on our family blog.  I was very fortunate to have two of those moments within these last few weeks.  Totally random and somewhat embarrassing, but memorable!

Last week while at t-ball practice my 4 year old, Parker, noticed a very pregnant woman.  I could see him eyeing her a bit.  At that moment I remember thinking- I wish I knew what he was thinking.  Fast forward about 1 minute, I along with the rest of the parents standing by me were made aware of his questioning thoughts!
"Mom, what does that girl have in her shirt?"
"What."  -I was well aware of what he said but that was just the first thing that popped out (no pun intended)
"I said, what's in her shirt?  Is there a baby in her shirt?"
"Yes, Parker.  But it's not in her shirt.  It's in her belly.  Like when you were little and Nolan was in my belly."  - Why did I even go there???
"Oh, ok."  -Pause and some more thinking in his head...."uh, is that baby going to come out her mouth?"
Not sure how to respond, I told him we'd discuss it when we got home.  He is 4, so telling the truth is out of the question...it would most definitely scare him and bring on all sorts of other questions.  Heck I'm 30 and I still get scared thinking about going through it again sometime.  Do people still use the stork story?  He has seen Dumbo so I could totally pull it off.  Lucky for me...he forgot.  So, I have some time to come up with a plan before the next Q & A session!

I'm not sure what's up with that kid but he had another "moment" the other night when I was laying with him in bed.

"Mom, how much did I cost."
"What are you talking about?"
"How much did you have to pay for me?"
"What do you mean"
"When I was a baby and now I'm getting so big...how much did I cost when I
was a baby and you got me?"
"Parker, I didn't just go to a store and buy you.  Remember, you were in my belly just like Nolan was.  Did someone tell you I bought you?  Why did you ask me that?"
"I don't know.  Let's pretend we are camping...". -Once again lucky for me...he moved on.  I guess his attention span is not on track with his questioning mind!

Now, as for our littlest guy...he doesn't do a whole lot of talking, but he has his fair share of random cuteness!!

Spring Shopping-Kid Edition

It's time we put the sweats away and start getting some sun on our legs!  With my recent spring break I was able to get some of our spring shopping done.

Plaid Shorts are a must at our home.  Perfect for a polobutton down or a TSlip on shoes, yes please!

Weekend happenings

We were loving the beautiful weather this weekend.  It was a bit chilly Friday and Saturday, but nothing a sweatshirt couldn't fix!  It was nice to get our hands dirty planting some vegetables in the garden and a few flowers in pots.  We might be a bit early on the flowers, but I just couldn't wait any longer!

He has this gardening thing down to a science.  Straight perfect rows and all!!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend and were able to get outside and enjoy the fresh air!

recap

You may have noticed that last week I took a little break from the blog.  It was a rough week for us so blogging was just not in the plan. But I'm back, as you can tell from this week's posts and am ready to share some of the fun and relaxing things we were able to do.

Brandon made a trip to Augusta for the Masters.  He couldn't get over how beautiful it was.

The Jahn farm cats (yes more than one cat) had kittens...10 kittens to be exact.  I see a spaying in the near future!  Anyone need a cat? :)

It was too beautiful to stay inside, so we did a little tractor riding!

Brandon and some of the guys played 18.

Stella and Dot party...too many cute things! I'm still debating and will place my order this weekend.  Here are some of my favorites.

706 Miles To Hilton Head

A friend of mine posted on Facebook about wanting to lose some flab before an upcoming trip.  She wanted to walk 100 miles before she left.  It got my head spinning.  We have our summer vacation planned to go to Hilton Head.  Well, what if we challenged ourselves to walk/run/bike/swim the distance we will travel to get there before our trip.  A way to motivate ourselves to get out of the house as a family and exercise.
I threw the idea out there to Brandon.  Let's just say he wasn't as into the idea as I was.  He's a little better at geography (I hadn't really thought about how many miles it was) than I am so he thought I was a bit crazy.  I had to do some re-evaluating of my plan and came up with this.
As a family we will walk/run/bike/swim the distance (and trust me when I say I searched the shortest route), but each person counts.  So, if we go for a 3 mile walk as a family we would count that as 15 miles.  If your wondering how I figure out that answer: 4 people +1 dog =5 people at 3 miles each = 15 miles.  Yes, I am counting the dog! ;)
Is my goal lofty? YES!  But it is totally do-able!  It's a goal people. You're supposed to have to work at it to reach it!  I'll be sure to keep you posted on our progress.  Now, I need to get moving- we've got some running to do.

My obsession

Before I begin my post planned for today, I want to say that my heart goes out to everyone and anyone affected by the tragedy in Boston. I pray that the injured find comfort and those that lost a loved one find peace.
I think it is fair to say that I am obsessed with houses.  I search  www.buyhomesnow.com  weekly to see if any houses that we might be interested in are on the market.  I browse www.houseplans.com  often to search for the perfect house plan for us if we build.  I marvel daily at all of the amazing pictures of houses that I dream of someday having on www.houzz.com.

I really really like this house
I mean really, who wouldn't want to live in this house??

epic closet
And this closet...really!?!

When my husband and I bought our house 6 years ago we said it was our "10 year house".  It was the perfect house for us!  We absolutely loved it and were so proud to have purchased our first home together! The house, built in the 40's, has large thick woodwork, original hardwood floors, glass knobs and a good solid structure.  It is just beginning to get too small for us as we have expanded our family in the past 6 years.  And as you know, the more family members you have, the more stuff you have.

My goal is to put our house on the market in the next year or two.  (Notice I said "my" goal...Brandon and I have different ideas when it comes to goal setting)   During this time we will decide which route we will go, buy or build.  In my mind there are pros and cons to both.

So, for the next year or two or three I will remain happy in our first home and look forward to what the future housing market has in store for us! (Unless of course you are interested...everything is for sale for the right price-wink,wink)

Oh yeah, and I guess that leaves me with more projects to do in this house!!!  I can't wait to show you the one I'm working on now.  Here's a little sneak peak!

Hmmm, what am I up to now????

rusted treasures

On our way home from our staycation, we made a quick stop at a little store where I love browsing.

Fox Hollow Gallery is a quaint little shop filled with primitive wood and metal treasures by Indiana craftsman.  Some of the metal works are even done in house.  They are the sweetest couple who love to chat it up while you shop!  They even stopped their morning coffee break short to let us in a little early!

I am totally in love with this helicoptor.  It would look so cute hanging in a little boy's room.  Nolan, how do you feel about a bedroom makeover??

I am seeing these signs all over pinterest! (hmmm, is that a bedpan turned artwork in the background???)

Brandon had his eye on some outdoor copper cattails. (Sorry, didn't get a picture)  Father's day gift perhaps!
